Chest X-ray with nipple markers: what to know

A rounded shadow near the lower lung can sometimes be caused by a nipple rather than a problem inside the chest. The markers give the radiologist a skin reference. Their presence does not mean an abnormality has been found; the report may say the shadow matches the marker or suggest further assessment.

Review the written report with the clinician who requested the image. Ask whether the marker explained the shadow and whether anything else was seen. Mention persistent cough, fever, breathlessness or chest pain, since conditions such as Pneumonia or Tuberculosis may need separate assessment.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, or severe persistent chest pain. Arrange prompt review for coughing blood, worsening breathlessness, high fever, or a cough that does not settle. Urgency depends on symptoms and the report, not the marker itself.

Ask whether the markers accounted for the shadow, whether another view or scan is needed, and how your symptoms affect the interpretation. Ask whether a GP Consultation should coordinate follow-up.
