Short answer

The chest X-ray process involves positioning your chest against an image detector, holding still, and briefly holding your breath.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Position
Standing, sitting or lying down may be used.
Breathing
You may hold your breath briefly for each image.
Afterwards
Most people return to normal activities straight away.

What the test shows

X-rays pass through the chest to create images with different shades that represent air, soft tissue and bone. The radiographer may take a front view and a side view so the lungs and heart can be assessed from more than one angle. The test may help investigate infection, fluid, changes in the heart outline or a long-lasting cough. It does not by itself provide a complete diagnosis; a clinician combines the report with your history, examination and sometimes other tests.

What to expect at the appointment

You will usually check in, answer questions about your symptoms and pregnancy possibility, and remove items that could appear on the image. You may stand, sit or lie down depending on your mobility. The radiographer will position you and ask you to take a deep breath and keep still for a moment. Tell them if pain, weakness or breathlessness makes a position difficult. After the images are checked for clarity, you can normally leave and continue your usual activities unless your clinician gives different advice.

When symptoms need urgent attention

Arrange urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, sudden chest pressure, collapse, new confusion or blue-grey lips. Seek prompt advice for worsening fever, chest pain or coughing blood. These symptoms need assessment based on their severity, whether or not an X-ray has been arranged. A chest X-ray may be part of an assessment for pneumonia, chronic cough or tuberculosis, but it should not replace urgent clinical care.

Useful questions

Ask which views are planned, whether you can receive the report, how the result will affect your care, and whether symptoms need follow-up if the X-ray appears normal.

Questions people ask

Does a chest X-ray hurt?

The X-ray itself does not cause pain, though holding a position can be uncomfortable if you are already sore or short of breath.

Can I move during the image?

Keeping still helps prevent a blurred image; tell the radiographer if you cannot hold the position comfortably.
