Chest X-Ray Preparation: What to Know Before Your Appointment

A chest X-ray uses a small amount of radiation to create images of the lungs, heart and chest bones. Jewellery, bras with metal parts, clothing fasteners and medical devices can obscure the image, so the radiographer may ask you to remove them or change into a gown. The examination is commonly requested when symptoms such as a persistent cough, fever or breathing difficulty need assessment; it can help investigate pneumonia, tuberculosis or other chest problems, but an image is interpreted alongside your symptoms and examination.

Follow the appointment instructions from the imaging centre. You generally do not need to fast, but check if your referral includes another test. Wear simple clothing and leave necklaces, body piercings and other metal objects at home when possible. Tell the team if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, or have difficulty standing or holding your breath. Bring your referral and any relevant previous imaging details. During the image, you may stand or sit against the detector, take a breath in, and hold it briefly while remaining still.

A scheduled X-ray should not delay urgent help. Seek immediate medical care for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, sudden chest pressure, fainting, or coughing up more than a small streak of blood.
