What Should You Know About a Chest X-Ray Order?

A chest X-ray order is a clinician’s request for an image of your chest to assess your lungs, heart, airways, and nearby bones. The order may be made after an examination or because symptoms such as cough, fever, chest discomfort, or breathlessness need further assessment. An order does not by itself confirm a diagnosis; the image is interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination, and medical history.

A chest X-ray can help identify changes such as signs of infection, fluid around the lungs, air leakage, or changes in the heart’s size. It may be requested when a clinician is assessing pneumonia, a persistent cough, or another chest problem. Some conditions need additional tests because an X-ray cannot show every cause of chest symptoms and a normal image does not explain every symptom. Your clinician or radiologist reviews the image and decides whether further assessment is needed.

Follow the imaging centre’s instructions and bring the order or referral details, along with relevant medical information. Tell the radiographer if you are pregnant or might be pregnant before the examination. You may need to remove jewellery, glasses, or clothing with metal fasteners. During the X-ray, you will usually stand, sit, or lie in position while holding still and briefly holding your breath. The procedure is quick, but ask when and how the report will be shared with the clinician who ordered it.

Do not wait for a routine X-ray appointment if you develop severe or worsening breathlessness, chest pressure or pain, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion, or coughing up a large amount of blood. Seek urgent medical help for these symptoms. If symptoms are persistent but not severe, arrange a GP consultation and mention that a chest X-ray has been ordered, including any change since the order was made.

You can ask what symptom or finding prompted the order, whether you need to prepare in a particular way, when the report should be available, and who will explain the result. Ask what the next step would be if the image is normal or shows a change. If tuberculosis is being considered, ask whether tuberculosis screening or another test is also appropriate.
