What a chest X-ray of healthy lungs can show

The image can show the lungs, airways, heart size, ribs and part of the diaphragm. A report may use phrases such as clear lungs, no focal opacity, or no pleural fluid. These findings are reassuring for problems that are visible on this type of image, but a normal result does not explain every cough, breathlessness episode or chest pain. Some conditions need an examination, breathing tests, blood tests or another scan.

Read the radiology report with the clinician who requested it, especially if symptoms continue. Keep the report with your medical records and mention previous chest images if you have them. A persistent cough may need a GP Consultation, while suspected infection or another lung problem may require focused follow-up. Do not start or stop treatment solely because an image looks normal.

Seek urgent medical help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, or chest pain that is severe or worsening. Arrange timely clinical review for coughing up blood, a fever that persists, unexplained weight loss, or breathlessness that is new or increasing. A chest X-ray result should not delay care when symptoms are severe.

Ask which structures were assessed, whether the finding matches your symptoms, and whether you need repeat imaging or another test. You can also ask what changes should prompt a return visit.
