Chest X-Ray During Pregnancy

Tell the referrer and radiographer that you are pregnant or might be pregnant before the examination. They will consider your symptoms, stage of pregnancy, the body area being examined, and whether another test could answer the question. A chest image directs the beam at the chest, away from the womb, and the team uses the smallest practical exposure. The examination does not make you radioactive. It can help assess infection such as pneumonia, or other causes of breathlessness and chest pain. A film cannot explain every symptom, so the result is interpreted with your clinical assessment.

Follow the imaging department’s instructions about clothing, jewellery, and positioning. Usually no special preparation is needed. If you have fever, a persistent cough, or worsening breathlessness, arrange medical review rather than postponing care because of pregnancy. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain that is sudden or persistent, fainting, blue lips, confusion, coughing blood, or a marked reduction in your ability to speak or walk because of breathing difficulty. Pregnancy can change how symptoms are assessed, but it should not prevent emergency care when breathing or circulation may be affected.

Ask what clinical question the image is intended to answer, whether another test would be suitable, and how the result will change treatment. Confirm that the imaging team knows about your pregnancy and ask when the report will be reviewed. If infection exposure is relevant, ask whether Tuberculosis Screening is needed.
