What should you know about chest X-ray for women?
Short answer
The imaging method is generally the same, but tell the radiographer if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding. The team can confirm whether the examination is appropriate and apply the relevant safety process. If you have breast tenderness, recent surgery or difficulty moving, mention it before positioning begins.

What the image assesses
The image can help a clinician assess the lungs, heart outline, ribs and diaphragm. It may contribute to investigating cough, fever, chest discomfort or breathlessness, including conditions such as pneumonia, tuberculosis or bronchiectasis. A chest X-ray cannot determine every cause of breast or chest symptoms, so examination and other tests may still be needed.
Preparing for your appointment
Wear easy-to-remove metal accessories and clothing, and ask whether you should bring earlier images. Tell staff about pregnancy concerns before the image is taken, not after. Follow the requesting clinician’s plan for receiving the report. If you are unsure why the X-ray was ordered, request a GP Consultation to review the symptoms and purpose together.
Do not delay urgent care
Seek urgent help for sudden breathlessness, severe chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue lips, or coughing blood with breathing difficulty. New severe symptoms during pregnancy also need prompt assessment. A booked examination is not a substitute for urgent care when warning signs are present.
