What should you know about chest X-ray examination?

The report may describe the appearance of the lungs, heart size, bones and spaces around the lungs. Findings can be normal, suggestive of infection or inflammation, or require comparison with earlier images. A chest X-ray may contribute to assessment of pneumonia, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis or chronic cough; it is interpreted alongside your history and examination.

Tell the radiographer about possible pregnancy, trouble standing, or pain that affects your movement. Ask how and when results will be shared rather than assuming the imaging centre will explain the report. Keep your follow-up appointment so a clinician can relate the findings to your symptoms and decide whether further assessment is needed.

Do not wait for a scheduled X-ray if you have sudden severe breathlessness, crushing or worsening chest pain, collapse, new confusion, or blue lips. Coughing blood with breathing difficulty also needs urgent assessment. Contact a clinician promptly if fever, cough or breathlessness is worsening after the examination.

Ask why this test was chosen, whether previous images should be provided, what the report terms mean, and which symptoms should prompt earlier review.
