What Should You Know About a Chest X-Ray Erect View?

You stand or sit upright in front of the X-ray detector, usually with your chest against it, while the image is taken. Upright positioning can show the air and fluid levels in the chest more clearly than a view taken lying down. The radiographer may ask you to take a deep breath and hold it briefly so the lungs are expanded.

A clinician may use the image to look for changes such as an area of infection, fluid around a lung, air outside the lung, or a difference in the size and position of chest structures. It can also help assess some causes of cough, fever, breathlessness or chest discomfort. The picture is only one part of an assessment: symptoms, examination findings and previous images affect its meaning.

A report may describe the lungs as clear, or recommend comparison with an earlier image or another test. A chest X-ray does not identify every lung or heart problem, and a finding that needs follow-up does not by itself establish a diagnosis. Your clinician will explain the result in the context of why the test was requested.

Usually, no special preparation is needed. Wear clothing that allows the upper chest to be exposed if required, and remove metal objects such as necklaces, bras with metal parts or clothing fasteners from the area. Tell the radiographer if you may be pregnant before the exposure, even when the examination has been requested urgently.

During the examination, remain still and follow the breathing instruction. The exposure itself is brief and you do not feel the X-rays. If standing is difficult, tell the radiographer; another position may be possible, although the image will be interpreted according to how it was taken. Arrange follow-up with the requesting clinician so you understand when and how the result will be discussed.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion, coughing up a large amount of blood, or sudden severe chest pain. These symptoms need assessment based on how you feel and should not wait for an X-ray report.
