What should you know about chest X-ray during pregnancy?

A chest X-ray uses ionising radiation, so the clinician considers the reason for imaging, the body area, and whether the result will change care. The beam is directed at the chest rather than the abdomen, and the radiography team follows protection procedures. Do not assume that pregnancy automatically means a needed test must be postponed.

The image may help investigate pneumonia, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, or concerning breathing symptoms. It may not provide a complete explanation, so examination and other tests can still be necessary.

Tell the referring clinician and radiographer that you are pregnant or could be pregnant, even if the pregnancy is early. Ask why the image is needed and whether timing or another test would be suitable. Follow instructions about clothing, jewellery, positioning, and staying still. Do not cancel an urgent appointment without discussing the decision with the treating team.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, blue lips, coughing blood, or sudden confusion. These symptoms need prompt medical assessment during pregnancy; concern about the X-ray should not delay care. Tell the emergency team about the pregnancy as soon as you arrive.

Ask what the image is intended to check, how the examination will be adjusted for pregnancy, and whether your symptoms require same-day review. If tuberculosis is being considered, ask how tuberculosis screening fits with your pregnancy care.
