What to know about a chest X-ray

The image can help investigate persistent cough, breathlessness, chest pain, fever or an abnormal chest examination. It may show changes associated with [Pneumonia](/conditions/pneumonia/), [Tuberculosis](/conditions/tuberculosis/) or other lung conditions, but it cannot answer every question. [Bronchiectasis](/conditions/bronchiectasis/) and [Chronic Cough](/conditions/chronic-cough/) may require additional history, testing or specialist review.

Wear clothing that can be adjusted easily and remove jewellery or other metal items when asked. Tell the radiographer if you might be pregnant. Follow the local instructions, stand or lie as directed, and hold your breath briefly when requested so the image is clear. Ask when and how the result will be discussed; the radiographer may not provide the diagnosis during the examination.

An X-ray appointment should not delay emergency care for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, coughing blood or severe chest pain. Contact a clinician promptly if a cough persists, fever worsens, or breathing becomes more difficult.

Ask what the X-ray is checking, whether you need to prepare differently because of pregnancy or previous imaging, when the report will be available, and whether you need [Tuberculosis Screening](/treatments/diagnostics-and-screening/tuberculosis-screening/) or another test.
