Cavitary pneumonia

Inflammation and infection can damage part of the lung, allowing a cavity filled with air, fluid, or infected material to form. The finding may appear on a chest scan during assessment of pneumonia. Causes can include bacterial infection, aspiration, or another infection, so the image alone does not identify the organism. Cough, fever, chills, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, and coughing up phlegm can occur. Blood-streaked phlegm or persistent symptoms should be reported promptly.

Follow the treatment plan closely and complete prescribed antimicrobial treatment unless the prescriber changes it. Rest, drink fluids if safe for you, avoid smoking, and keep follow-up appointments. Assessment may include oxygen measurement, blood tests, sputum testing, and repeat imaging to check response or look for an abscess or other cause. Do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics. Ask about infection-control precautions if you are coughing, especially around vulnerable household members.

Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, chest pain, coughing up more than a small amount of blood, or rapidly worsening weakness.
