Causes of wheezing when lying down

Short answer
Wheezing when lying down may reflect asthma, mucus, nasal blockage, infection, or another airway problem, and new breathing difficulty should be assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why position can change the sound
Lying flat can let mucus collect, make nasal drainage more noticeable, or increase the feeling of restricted breathing. Asthma may cause symptoms at night or after exposure to dust, pets, smoke, or cold air. Allergic rhinitis can block the nose and encourage mouth breathing. Acute bronchitis may leave inflamed airways and cough for a while after an infection. COPD can also produce wheeze and breathlessness, particularly with exertion or respiratory infections. In a young child, bronchiolitis may make breathing and feeding harder. The pattern is useful information, but it does not establish a diagnosis by itself.
Steps that may help
Try resting propped up rather than completely flat, keep the room free of smoke and strong scents, and follow any existing breathing-treatment plan. Note whether symptoms follow meals, nasal congestion, exercise, or a particular room. Seek a clinical review if wheezing recurs, wakes you, limits activity, or comes with cough or fever. A clinician can decide whether an inhaler, nebuliser treatment, allergy care, or another approach is suitable.
When urgent help is needed
Get emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, faintness, confusion, or trouble speaking. Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat after food, medicine, or a sting may indicate anaphylaxis. A child who is pulling in at the ribs, grunting, becoming floppy, or unable to drink needs immediate assessment.
Questions to take along
Ask whether lying-flat symptoms suggest asthma, nasal obstruction, infection, or another cause; whether you need breathing tests; and what position or treatment is safest during an episode.

Questions people ask
Does wheezing at night always mean asthma?
No. Asthma is one possible cause, but mucus, nasal allergy, infection, and other airway conditions can create a similar pattern.
When should positional wheezing be checked?
Arrange review for repeated, new, sleep-disrupting, or unexplained wheezing, even when it improves after sitting up.
