What to know about community-acquired pneumonia

Pneumonia inflames the small air spaces and surrounding tissue in the lungs. Community-acquired means the infection began outside a hospital or similar healthcare setting. Bacteria, viruses, and other germs can be involved, so the cause cannot be identified from symptoms alone.

A person with pneumonia may develop cough, coughing up phlegm, fever, chills, chest discomfort, tiredness, or shortness of breath. COVID-19 and Influenza can also cause respiratory symptoms, which is why examination and targeted testing may be useful.

Arrange a clinical assessment when pneumonia is suspected. Follow the treatment plan, rest, drink fluids if you can, and use medicines only as directed. If an antibiotic is prescribed, take it according to the label and report troublesome reactions rather than changing the course yourself.

Avoid smoking and stay away from people who are vulnerable while you are unwell. Monitor breathing, alertness, temperature, and ability to drink. Recovery can be gradual, so mention ongoing symptoms at follow-up instead of assuming they are harmless.

Seek urgent help for severe or increasing breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, or chest pain that is severe or worsening. Prompt review is also needed when fever or cough is deteriorating, or when someone with pneumonia becomes unusually drowsy. Severe infection can progress to Sepsis and needs immediate attention.

Ask whether the symptoms fit pneumonia, whether testing is needed to identify the cause, and which treatment is appropriate. Check how to monitor breathing and hydration, when improvement should begin, and exactly which changes require urgent reassessment.
