What to know about a chest X-ray

A chest X-ray can help a clinician look for changes associated with pneumonia, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, or other chest problems. It may also help assess a persistent cough or breathlessness. The image is interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination, medical history, and sometimes other tests.

The test does not explain every cause of chest symptoms, and a normal image does not automatically settle the diagnosis. A GP Consultation can help connect the result with your symptoms and decide whether follow-up is needed.

Tell the radiographer if you may be pregnant, and remove jewellery or clothing that could cover the chest area if asked. You will usually stand or sit against the imaging equipment and hold still while the image is taken. Follow the instructions about breathing and positioning; the process is brief.

Ask when and how the result will be explained. Keep a note of ongoing cough, fever, chest pain, or breathlessness so you can describe any change during follow-up. Do not interpret the image alone or delay care while waiting for a report.

Arrange medical review for a cough that persists, unexplained breathlessness, recurring chest infections, coughing blood, or symptoms that are worsening. Seek urgent help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, or sudden severe chest pain. These warning signs need prompt assessment regardless of an earlier X-ray result.

Ask why the X-ray is being requested, what finding would change the next step, and when you will receive the report. Check whether you need another test, such as Tuberculosis Screening, and what symptoms should prompt an earlier review.
