Can brain metastases be prevented?

They develop when cancer cells travel from another part of the body to the brain. Treatment of the original cancer can limit this process, although cancer cells may sometimes spread despite appropriate care.

The practical aim is to keep the primary cancer controlled and recognize any spread promptly. Lung cancer, breast cancer and melanoma can give rise to brain metastases, but the plan differs according to the original tumour, its features, treatments already received and the person's overall health.

Routine brain imaging is not appropriate for every person with cancer. A cancer team may recommend scans when the cancer type, stage, treatment plan or new neurological symptoms make imaging useful. A normal scan describes that moment; it cannot promise that metastases will never develop later.

Attend oncology appointments, take anticancer medicines as prescribed and complete planned scans or blood tests. Tell the team if side effects are making treatment difficult rather than stopping medicine without guidance; supportive care or an adjusted plan may help you continue safely.

Keep a brief record of new headaches, weakness, balance changes, seizures, vision changes, speech difficulty or unusual confusion. Include when each problem began and whether it is worsening, because that detail helps the team decide how urgently to assess it.

Seek emergency help for a first seizure, sudden weakness or numbness on one side, new trouble speaking, loss of consciousness, severe sudden headache, or rapidly worsening confusion. These signs need urgent assessment because several serious conditions can cause them.

Contact your cancer team promptly for a persistent new headache, repeated vomiting, increasing unsteadiness, personality change or a new vision problem. Symptoms alone cannot confirm brain metastases; an examination and, when appropriate, imaging are needed.

Ask whether your cancer type and current findings make brain imaging useful, which neurological changes should trigger a same-day call, and whom to contact outside clinic hours. You can also ask how the present treatment controls disease beyond the original site and what the next monitoring visit will involve.
