Can asthma cause chronic cough?

Asthma makes the airways more sensitive and prone to inflammation. A cough may be dry or produce mucus, and it can worsen at night, after exercise, in cold air, or around smoke, dust or pollen. Wheezing and chest tightness may occur, but some people mainly experience cough. A cough lasting several weeks should not automatically be labelled asthma: post-nasal drip, reflux, infection, medication effects and other lung conditions can also be responsible. Record when the cough starts, what you were doing, possible exposures and whether it affects sleep. A clinician may listen to your chest, review medicines, assess nasal or reflux symptoms and arrange breathing tests when appropriate. If asthma is diagnosed, use inhalers exactly as prescribed and ask for a technique check. Avoid smoke and note whether a reliever changes symptoms, but do not use someone else’s inhaler or increase treatment without advice.

Book an assessment for a cough that persists, keeps returning or interferes with sleep or activity. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, chest pain, coughing blood, or rapidly worsening breathing. A cough with fever or marked weakness also deserves prompt medical attention, particularly if you have an existing lung condition.
