What should you know about a caffeine allergy test?

Caffeine can cause palpitations, tremor, anxiety, flushing, stomach upset, or sleep disturbance without being an allergy. An allergic reaction involves the immune system and may include hives, swelling, wheeze, or vomiting soon after exposure. Coffee, tea, energy drinks, medicines, and flavourings contain different substances, so the product and timing matter. Skin or blood testing may be considered for another suspected allergen, but results must match the history.

Write down the product, amount, symptoms, timing, and whether anyone else became unwell. Keep ingredient labels and list your medicines. Do not deliberately consume a suspected trigger at home to prove a reaction. A clinician may suggest supervised testing or a planned avoidance trial when appropriate. Check labels carefully because caffeine may appear in drinks, chocolate, supplements, and some pain medicines.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, faintness, widespread hives with vomiting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These can indicate anaphylaxis. Mild jitteriness or a fast heartbeat after caffeine still deserves advice if it is recurrent, severe, or associated with chest symptoms.

Ask whether your pattern suggests allergy, intolerance, medication effect, or another condition; whether testing is useful; and how to avoid caffeine without losing access to necessary medicines or nutrition.
