What to know about C4-C7 ACDF

ACDF combines disc removal, decompression, and fusion. A surgeon prepares the C4-C5, C5-C6, and C6-C7 spaces, inserts graft-bearing spacers, and may use a plate and screws to support the construct.

A C4-C7 operation spans four vertebrae and three motion segments. Each proposed level should have a reason for inclusion, such as disc or bone-related narrowing that aligns with symptoms and neurological findings.

A longer fusion changes more of the neck's mechanical movement than a shorter construct. Planning therefore considers alignment, bone health, the pattern of compression, previous treatment, and whether a different surgical route or decompression strategy would suit the problem.

Before agreeing to surgery, review the images with the surgeon and ask what finding exists at each disc space. Share all medicines and supplements, nicotine exposure, swallowing or voice issues, and any earlier spine operations. Follow individualized instructions for eating, drinking, and medication on the day of surgery.

For recovery, prepare easy-to-reach essentials and arrange transport. Follow the discharge plan for the incision, collar if prescribed, walking, lifting, and return to work. Keep scheduled checks because symptoms alone cannot show whether fusion is developing as intended.

Call the treating team for fever, wound leakage, spreading redness, pain that is becoming harder to control, or swallowing trouble that limits fluids. New tingling or a return of arm pain also deserves timely clinical advice.

Treat difficulty breathing, fast-growing swelling at the front of the neck, sudden limb weakness, marked walking instability, or new bladder or bowel loss as emergencies. These symptoms need immediate assessment because they may signal pressure on the airway or nervous system.

Ask the surgeon to identify the goal for each treated level and explain how a three-level operation compares with other suitable options. Discuss expected changes in arm symptoms, hand function, walking, neck discomfort, and range of motion separately.

Request details about graft and implant choices, protection of the voice and swallowing structures, plans for rehabilitation, and how progress will be checked. Clarify whom to contact after discharge and where to go if an emergency develops.
