Bright light sensitivity symptoms: what to know

You may squint, close your eyes, seek shade or develop headache when exposed to light. Migraine is a common setting and may also bring nausea, visual changes or dizziness. Redness, discharge, gritty pain or a tender eye can point towards conjunctivitis or another eye problem. Light sensitivity with fever, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion or a rash needs urgent attention because meningitis can present with that combination. The symptom does not identify one diagnosis by itself; whether it is sudden, one-sided, painful or accompanied by vision change helps guide assessment.

Use soft, indirect lighting and reduce glare from screens or windows. Rest your eyes, take screen breaks and wear sunglasses outdoors if they make travel safer and more comfortable. Avoid rubbing a painful or red eye and do not share towels, cosmetics or eye drops. Contact lenses should be removed if the eye is painful or red until a clinician advises otherwise. Note when the sensitivity began, which lights trigger it, and whether headache, redness, discharge, fever or visual change occurs.

Seek urgent help for light sensitivity with severe or sudden headache, stiff neck, fever, rash, confusion, weakness, seizure or reduced consciousness. Arrange same-day eye or medical advice for significant eye pain, vision loss, injury, chemical exposure, marked redness or a painful red eye with nausea. Make a routine appointment if sensitivity persists, recurs or interferes with reading, driving or work.
