What should you know about blood sputum causes?

Inflamed airway surfaces can bleed after repeated coughing. Acute bronchitis may cause a short-term cough with mucus, while pneumonia can cause fever, chest discomfort, and breathing difficulty. Bronchiectasis may lead to recurrent mucus production and blood-streaked sputum, and COPD can make airway symptoms persistent. Blood from the nose or gums may drain into the throat and then be coughed out. These conditions do not all require the same treatment, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.

Record the amount, colour, timing, and number of episodes, and note fever, chest pain, breathlessness, weight change, or night sweats. Avoid smoking and inhaled irritants. Arrange a clinician review for recurrent blood, a cough that is not settling, or known lung disease. A clinician may listen to your chest and decide whether sputum testing, blood work, or imaging is useful. Antibiotics are appropriate only for selected bacterial infections and should be prescribed after assessment.
