What should you know about bladder infection pain during intercourse?

Inflamed bladder or urethral tissues can make pressure and movement uncomfortable. Burning during urination, urgency, frequent urination, and lower abdominal discomfort support urinary irritation, but pain during intercourse is not specific to a bladder infection. Vaginal dryness, pelvic conditions, sexually transmitted infections, prostatitis, and other causes can feel similar. The location, timing, discharge, bleeding, and urinary symptoms help a clinician narrow the possibilities.

Pause intercourse if it increases pain and arrange a clinical assessment, particularly when urinary symptoms are new or persistent. Drink normally unless fluids are restricted, avoid using leftover antibiotics, and mention any new partner or concern about sexually transmitted infection. A urine test or other examination may be appropriate. Follow the treatment plan provided and return if discomfort continues after urinary symptoms settle.

Seek prompt care for fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, blood, unusual discharge, pelvic pain, or pain during pregnancy. Emergency help is needed for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or very little urine, which can signal serious infection or sepsis. Severe or sudden pelvic pain should not be attributed to a bladder infection without examination.
