Bee sting allergy test: what to know

An allergist may use a skin prick test, an intradermal test, a blood test, or a combination. These tests look for an immune response to specific insect venom. A positive result shows sensitisation, but the clinician interprets it alongside what happened during a real sting. A large local swelling does not by itself prove a dangerous systemic allergy.

Record the sting symptoms, how quickly they appeared, and any treatment given. Tell the clinician about medicines, asthma, pregnancy, and previous reactions; some medicines can affect skin testing. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. If venom allergy is confirmed, discuss a written action plan, access to emergency medicine, and whether venom immunotherapy is appropriate.

After a sting, seek emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, widespread hives, repeated vomiting, or sudden weakness. Use prescribed adrenaline as directed while waiting for help. A past mild reaction does not rule out a more serious future reaction.
