Why bald spots can develop in a beard

Alopecia areata can present with clearly defined, smooth patches of hair loss. A fungal infection may instead cause scale, inflammation or broken hairs and requires a different treatment. Friction, follicle inflammation and scarring disorders are other possibilities, so appearance and examination matter more than the label ‘bald spot’.

Smooth skin with preserved follicle openings differs from a rough patch containing scale, crusts or snapped hairs. Redness, pain, discharge and a scar-like surface suggest active skin disease rather than ordinary variation in beard density. Other patches on the scalp or body can also help a dermatologist recognise the pattern.

A symptom does not identify its cause on its own. Bald patches are a presentation of alopecia areata, but infection and inflammatory conditions can also produce local hair loss. Treatment chosen from appearance alone may delay the correct diagnosis.

Avoid scratching, close shaving and harsh chemical products on affected skin. Do not share razors or towels when there is scale or inflammation, because a fungal cause has not yet been excluded. Photograph the patch in consistent light and note whether its edge expands or new areas appear.

Do not apply steroid, antifungal or hair-growth medication based solely on a photograph or social-media advice. These treatments address different processes, and some can change the appearance before examination. Hair transplantation is not a first response to unexplained or active patchy loss.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for a new, enlarging or recurring bald patch, particularly when eyelashes, eyebrows, scalp hair or nails also change. Seek prompt care for a painful boggy swelling, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness or marked facial swelling. Scarring, shiny skin or loss of visible follicle openings also warrants timely review.

Ask whether follicles appear intact, whether the patch needs fungal testing, what findings support alopecia areata, and how treatment will be monitored. Mention recent rashes, inflamed beard bumps, similar patches elsewhere and medicines already placed on the skin.
