What should you know about basilar pneumonia?

Basilar refers to the location near the lung bases, not to a separate type of infection. Pneumonia may cause Fever, Chills, Cough, tiredness, breathlessness, or Coughing Up Phlegm, but symptoms differ with age and health. The diagnosis is based on the history and examination, often with chest imaging and sometimes other tests. Causes can include viruses such as Influenza or COVID-19 and bacteria; the treatment depends on the suspected cause and how unwell you are.

Follow the prescribed treatment exactly and rest while gradually returning to activity. Drink enough fluid for your health needs, avoid smoking and second-hand smoke, and monitor breathing, temperature, alertness, and ability to drink. Do not use someone else's antibiotics or stop a prescribed course without advice. People with ongoing symptoms, older adults, infants, and those with heart or lung disease may need closer follow-up.

Get emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, or severe chest pain. Seek prompt medical review for worsening breathlessness, coughing blood, dehydration, persistent fever, or symptoms that improve and then become worse. Rapid deterioration with a very unwell appearance can signal Sepsis and needs immediate attention.
