A bald spot near the forehead: what it can mean

A corner that has receded gradually differs from an isolated smooth circle or an itchy, flaky patch. Check whether the spot is inside the scalp hairline, at a temple, or actually involves an eyebrow, because each distribution changes what a clinician considers.

Gradual thinning at both front corners may accompany patterned hair loss. Tension from tight ponytails, braids, extensions, head coverings or repeated styling may thin the fine hairs along the forehead edge. Alopecia areata may present as a smooth, discrete area and can sometimes involve eyebrow hair.

Flakes, crusts, itch and snapped hairs raise a different concern: scalp ringworm can present with patchy hair loss and surface change. Shiny skin with fewer visible follicle openings may indicate scarring, which needs earlier specialist assessment because damaged follicles may not recover normally.

Stop styles that pull at the front edge and reduce brushing, heat and chemical processing around fragile hairs. Keep the forehead and scalp clean with a mild product, but avoid picking scale or applying strong cosmetic mixtures to exposed skin. A clear photograph taken straight on can show whether the border is moving.

A clinician can distinguish lost follicles from broken or miniaturised shafts by examining the hairline under magnification. That distinction matters before using growth medicines or considering restoration procedures. Suspected fungal infection needs diagnosis and appropriate antifungal treatment rather than shared household remedies.

Arrange a medical review if the patch enlarges, returns in new places, extends into an eyebrow, or has persistent scale, soreness or intense itch. Prompt care is warranted for swelling, warmth, pus, spreading redness or fever.

Do not wait on a smooth but rapidly changing hairline or a shiny patch with burning and loss of follicle openings. Those findings can signal an inflammatory process where early diagnosis influences the chance of preserving unaffected follicles.

Ask whether the pattern looks like recession, traction, alopecia areata, infection or scarring. Bring a list of styling practices and scalp products, and ask whether any should stop. It is also reasonable to ask whether magnified examination, fungal sampling or selected blood tests are appropriate for your findings.
