Avoid rubbing, scratching, very close shaving, and sharing grooming tools. Wash gently and keep the area free from heavy fragranced products. Do not begin a steroid cream on an undiagnosed scaly patch, as infection requires a different approach. A clinician may examine hairs under magnification or collect scale for testing.

Seek a prompt appointment if the patch grows, new patches appear, or the scalp becomes itchy, tender, crusted, swollen, or scar-like. Drainage, fever, spreading redness, or rapidly increasing painful swelling warrants urgent care. Children with scaling and broken hairs need clinical assessment because oral prescription medicine may be required for scalp fungal infection. Sudden loss accompanied by eyebrow, eyelash, or body-hair changes should also be discussed with a dermatologist.

Ask whether intact follicle openings are visible and whether the hairs are shedding from the root or snapping. Find out if the surface suggests infection, alopecia areata, or a scarring disorder, and whether testing is needed before treatment. Mention neck symptoms, headwear, grooming habits, and all affected areas rather than focusing only on the most visible patch.
