Azithromycin for pneumonia

A clinician chooses an antibiotic according to the likely organism, illness severity, allergies, other medicines and local prescribing guidance. Viral pneumonia does not respond to antibiotics unless there is also a bacterial infection.

Pneumonia inflames the air sacs in the lungs and can present with cough, phlegm, fever, chills, chest discomfort or breathlessness. Azithromycin acts against susceptible bacteria and may be prescribed alone in selected cases or with another antibiotic when broader cover is needed.

Similar symptoms can occur with influenza or COVID-19, so symptoms alone do not identify which medicine will help. Examination and, when indicated, oxygen measurement, imaging or laboratory tests guide the decision.

Take azithromycin exactly as prescribed and complete the instructed course unless the prescriber changes it or a serious reaction occurs. Check what to do after a missed dose rather than doubling up. Tell the clinician about previous macrolide allergy, liver problems, heart-rhythm conditions and all medicines or supplements you use.

Rest, drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration and monitor breathing and alertness as well as temperature and cough. Contact the prescriber if symptoms worsen, troublesome side effects occur or there is no improvement in the timeframe they gave you.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, extreme drowsiness or severe chest pain. A widespread blistering rash, swelling of the mouth or throat, or breathing trouble after a dose also requires immediate care.

Request prompt reassessment for increasing breathlessness, inability to keep fluids down, coughing up blood, reduced urination, persistent fever or clear deterioration after treatment begins. These signs can reflect worsening pneumonia, dehydration, a complication or an antibiotic that does not cover the cause.

Clarify why azithromycin was selected, whether you need another antibiotic, and when improvement should become noticeable. Ask which side effects need a call, whether any regular medicines interact, and when a repeat examination or chest imaging is appropriate.
