Asthma Studio: understanding the name and checking the service

The name alone does not show who provides the service, what it measures, or whether it can diagnose or manage asthma. Check the specific provider's description and professional credentials before acting on its advice.

A dedicated asthma service may offer symptom assessment, inhaler-technique coaching, lung-function testing, trigger review and a written action plan. A digital product may instead record symptoms, reminders or readings and may not provide clinical assessment.

A useful programme should explain its scope, who reviews the information, how privacy is handled, and what happens when symptoms worsen. It should complement care from a qualified clinician, not delay urgent assessment.

Identify the organisation behind the name and whether appointments involve a licensed healthcare professional. Ask which tests are offered, how results are shared with your usual clinician, and whether the service provides an individual action plan.

Take your inhalers, medication list and any previous test results to an assessment. Do not stop a controller inhaler or replace prescribed care because an app, coach or promotional page suggests a different approach.

Seek urgent medical help for worsening breathlessness, difficulty speaking, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, exhaustion, or poor response to prescribed reliever medicine. Use the emergency instructions in your personal asthma plan while help is arranged.

A booking portal, message service or remote monitoring tool may not be watched continuously. Contact emergency services directly when severe warning signs are present.

Ask who delivers the service, which parts are medical care, how abnormal results are escalated, and who remains responsible for prescriptions. Your regular clinician can help decide whether its testing or coaching fits your current asthma plan.
