Is asthma contagious?

It is a long-term condition in which the airways can become inflamed, narrowed and sensitive. A person beside someone who is wheezing will not catch asthma from them.

People in the same home can encounter the same smoke, dust, pollen, strong scents, cold air or respiratory infection. These shared exposures may trigger asthma symptoms in someone whose airways are sensitive, but the asthma itself has not spread.

Respiratory viruses can pass between people and may provoke coughing or wheezing in a person with asthma. The infection may be contagious even though asthma is not. Asthma can also run in families because inherited tendency and shared surroundings influence who develops it.

Follow the prescribed asthma plan, keep reliever medication accessible, and notice whether cough, wheeze or chest tightness follows a particular exposure. Reduce tobacco smoke, incense, aerosol sprays and known allergens where practical.

If someone has a cold or similar infection, ordinary hygiene such as handwashing, covering coughs and avoiding shared drinking items can reduce infection spread. Do not isolate someone merely because they have asthma.

Arrange a clinical review if symptoms are recurring, disturbing sleep, limiting activity or requiring the reliever more often than the person’s action plan allows. A new fever, persistent cough or worsening wheeze may need assessment for an infection or another cause.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking in full sentences, blue or grey lips, unusual drowsiness, confusion, marked pulling-in around the ribs, or symptoms that do not improve after following the emergency steps in the asthma plan.
