What should you know about allergy strip test?

The phrase may be used for a skin test, a blood-based panel, or a commercial kit. These methods measure different things and cannot diagnose an allergy from a positive result alone.

A skin or blood result can show sensitisation, meaning the immune system recognises a substance. Clinical allergy requires a matching history: symptoms should occur after a relevant exposure. A positive finding without symptoms may not require avoidance, while a negative result may not explain every type of reaction.

Ask for the exact name of the test and a written list of substances assessed. Hair analysis, electrodermal testing, and broad food intolerance panels do not answer the same question as clinician-selected allergy testing.

Write down suspected triggers, the time between exposure and symptoms, the body areas affected, and any medicines used. Bring photographs of visible reactions and the packaging or ingredient list when relevant. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless the testing service gives specific instructions, because some antihistamines can affect skin-test responses.

After testing, review the findings with a clinician who can compare them with your history. Avoid removing many foods or making major environmental changes solely because a panel contains positive marks.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat tightness, faintness, confusion, or rapidly developing swelling of the tongue or lips after an exposure. If you have been prescribed an adrenaline auto-injector, use it as directed and still obtain emergency help.

Arrange a medical assessment for repeat reactions, wheezing, widespread hives, vomiting after a suspected food, or symptoms that interfere with sleep or normal activities. Testing should not be attempted at home by deliberately exposing yourself to a suspected trigger.
