Allergy panel tests

It is not a universal check for every allergy. The clinician should choose likely triggers from the reaction history, because broad panels can identify sensitisation that has never caused illness.

A skin-prick panel places tiny amounts of selected allergen extracts on the skin and checks for a local raised reaction. A blood panel measures allergen-specific immunoglobulin E in a sample. Both methods look for sensitisation; neither result alone confirms that ordinary exposure causes the person's symptoms.

Panels may be organised around inhaled triggers or foods. The useful question is whether a named exposure repeatedly precedes a compatible reaction, such as allergic rhinitis after animal contact or hives and breathing symptoms after a particular food. Asthma symptoms may coexist with allergy, but testing does not measure current breathing severity.

Write down what you touched, ate, inhaled, or took before each episode; how soon symptoms began; which body systems were affected; and what helped. Tell the clinic about eczema, asthma, pregnancy, fainting with needles, and all medicines. Some antihistamines interfere with skin testing, so the clinic may give specific pause instructions. Do not stop any prescribed drug unless the clinician confirms it is safe.

Review results with the person who ordered them. Continue eating tolerated foods unless advised otherwise, since avoiding foods on the basis of sensitisation alone can create needless restriction. If uncertainty remains, an allergy specialist may refine the allergen selection or consider a supervised challenge in an appropriate clinical setting.

Skin testing commonly causes temporary local itching or a small raised area; avoid scratching and follow the clinic's aftercare advice. Tell staff immediately if symptoms spread beyond the test site or you feel unwell. After a blood draw, apply pressure as directed and seek advice for persistent bleeding or worsening redness and swelling.

Outside the clinic, call emergency services for sudden breathing difficulty, throat tightness, faintness, or tongue or lip swelling after an exposure. Use prescribed emergency adrenaline without delay according to the action plan. Testing is for diagnosis and planning; it is not a substitute for treating an acute reaction.

Ask which allergens are included and why, whether blood or skin testing suits your circumstances, how medicines affect preparation, what a positive finding would change, and who will explain results that conflict with your lived exposure pattern.
