Allergic Postnasal Drip

Trigger avoidance, saline nasal care and suitable allergy medicines can reduce the nasal inflammation. Persistent symptoms deserve review because reflux, sinus problems and other conditions can create a similar throat sensation.

Allergic rhinitis often presents with sneezing, an itchy nose or eyes, clear nasal mucus and congestion alongside postnasal drip. Drainage can prompt throat clearing, a tickling cough, hoarseness or a feeling of mucus sticking in the throat. Symptoms may flare around dust, pollen, mould or animals.

Mucus colour alone cannot reliably identify the cause. Facial pain, fever, reduced sense of smell, heartburn or symptoms unrelated to allergy exposures can suggest that another explanation should be considered.

Limit contact with a known trigger where feasible, shower after heavy outdoor exposure, and wash bedding regularly. Drinking fluids may make thick secretions easier to clear. A saline nasal spray can moisturise the nose; if using a rinse device, follow its cleaning instructions and use water prepared exactly as the product directs.

A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine or anti-inflammatory nasal spray suits your symptoms and health history. Nasal sprays work best when aimed slightly outward, away from the central nasal wall, and used consistently as directed. Avoid repeatedly clearing the throat forcefully because this can maintain irritation.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat or facial swelling, or coughing up blood. These are not features to manage as routine allergic drainage.

Arrange an appointment if the drip persists, regularly disturbs sleep, causes ongoing cough or hoarseness, or comes with facial pain, fever, wheezing or unexplained weight loss. A clinician can examine the nose and throat, review possible triggers and decide whether allergy, sinus inflammation, reflux or another cause fits the pattern.

Describe when the drainage began, whether it varies by place or season, and any cough, nasal itching, facial discomfort or heartburn. Ask how long to try the recommended treatment, whether your spray technique is correct, and which symptoms should bring you back sooner.
