Ectopic pregnancy: signs, diagnosis, and treatment

It most often implants in a fallopian tube. Symptoms can be mild, severe, or absent at first, so the diagnosis relies on clinical assessment rather than symptoms alone. Treatment may involve monitoring, medicine, or surgery, depending on findings and the person's condition.

A pregnancy outside the uterine cavity does not have the space and tissue support needed to develop normally. As it grows, it can stretch and damage the structure where it implanted. If that structure ruptures, bleeding into the abdomen can become a medical emergency.

An ectopic pregnancy may present with one-sided lower abdominal or pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding or brown discharge, shoulder-tip pain, discomfort when passing urine or stool, dizziness, or faintness. These features can occur with other conditions too; their presence calls for assessment, not a self-diagnosis.

Contact a maternity, gynaecology, or emergency service promptly if you could be pregnant and develop pelvic pain or vaginal bleeding, even without a positive home test. Share the date of your last period, test results, symptoms, previous ectopic pregnancy, tubal surgery, fertility treatment, or pelvic infection history.

Assessment may include an examination, pregnancy-hormone blood tests taken over time, and a transvaginal ultrasound. Sometimes the pregnancy location is not clear at the first visit, making follow-up tests essential. Keep every arranged appointment and return sooner if symptoms worsen.

Call local emergency services or go to an emergency department now for sudden or severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, marked dizziness, fainting, collapse, confusion, pale or clammy skin, breathlessness, or heavy vaginal bleeding. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or seriously unwell. These signs can accompany internal bleeding and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask whether the pregnancy location has been confirmed, which follow-up blood tests or scans are needed, and what symptom change means returning immediately. If treatment is advised, discuss why monitoring, medicine, or surgery fits your circumstances, what follow-up confirms completion, and when it is medically appropriate to try for another pregnancy.
