Adjuvant PCV chemotherapy

Short answer

Adjuvant PCV chemotherapy combines procarbazine, lomustine and vincristine after initial tumour treatment to destroy remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of regrowth.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Medicines
PCV stands for procarbazine, lomustine and vincristine.
Treatment setting
Capsules are combined with medicine given into a vein on a planned cycle.
Key checks
Blood counts, symptoms and nerve function are reviewed throughout treatment.

The short answer

PCV is most closely associated with certain gliomas and may be offered after surgery, radiotherapy or both. Whether it suits a particular tumour depends on its microscopic type, molecular features, previous treatment, blood counts, nerve function and the person's overall health.

How the PCV combination works

Procarbazine and lomustine are capsules, while vincristine is given into a vein. They interfere with cancer-cell growth in different ways. A treatment cycle includes medicine days followed by recovery time, and the exact timetable comes from the oncology service.

Possible effects include nausea, tiredness, constipation, reduced appetite and lowered blood-cell counts. Vincristine can affect nerves, causing tingling, numbness or weakness. The team may delay treatment or adjust medicines if examination findings, blood results or side effects make that safer.

Managing PCV safely

Take capsules exactly according to the written schedule and contact the clinic if a dose is missed or vomited; do not repeat it unless instructed. Procarbazine interacts with some medicines, supplements, foods and alcohol, so follow the treatment unit's specific restrictions and check before taking anything new.

Attend blood tests even when feeling well. Record bowel changes, mouth soreness, tingling and temperature, and use the supplied emergency number if problems develop. Ask the team about anti-sickness medicine, fertility preservation and contraception before treatment begins.

Symptoms that need prompt care

Call the treatment service immediately for fever, chills, feeling suddenly unwell, unusual bleeding, breathlessness, a new widespread rash, repeated vomiting or diarrhoea, severe constipation, inability to pass stool or gas, or worsening numbness and weakness. Low blood counts and nerve or bowel effects require assessment rather than waiting for the next visit.

Use emergency services for a seizure that lasts longer than instructed in the personal care plan, repeated seizures without recovery, sudden severe breathing trouble, collapse or reduced consciousness. Bring the chemotherapy alert information if it is readily available.

Questions for your treatment team

Useful questions include why PCV was chosen for this tumour, how it will be sequenced with radiotherapy, which food and medicine interactions apply, what blood results could delay a dose, and whom to call outside clinic hours. Request written instructions for capsules and side-effect medicines before leaving the unit.

Questions people ask

Why are three medicines used in PCV?

Each medicine disrupts cancer-cell growth differently. Combining them can target remaining tumour cells through more than one mechanism, while monitoring helps the team manage overlapping effects.

Can a missed PCV capsule be taken later?

Contact the oncology unit for instructions. The answer depends on which medicine was missed and when; taking an extra capsule without advice could cause harm.
