Short answer

Acute light sensitivity means light suddenly feels uncomfortable or painful and deserves attention to its cause and accompanying symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

It may occur with a migraine, eye irritation or inflammation, an eye injury, or an infection. The pattern of onset, eye appearance, vision changes, headache, fever, and neck symptoms helps determine how quickly you need care.

What acute light sensitivity can mean

Light sensitivity is also called photophobia. It can affect one or both eyes and may make sunlight, screens, or ordinary indoor lighting difficult to tolerate. Migraine commonly presents with light sensitivity, often alongside a throbbing headache, nausea, or sensitivity to sound. Conjunctivitis can present with light discomfort together with redness, discharge, or a gritty feeling.

Severe sensitivity can also accompany inflammation inside the eye, corneal injury, or meningitis. Meningitis may present with light sensitivity plus fever, a severe headache, neck stiffness, confusion, marked drowsiness, or a rash. Those combinations require urgent assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

What to do now

Move to comfortable, dim lighting and reduce screen brightness while arranging care. Do not drive if your vision is blurred, your pain is distracting, or you feel unwell. If something may be in the eye, avoid rubbing it; gently rinsing with clean water may help loose debris. Remove contact lenses and leave them out until the eye is comfortable and a clinician says they can be used again.

Arrange a prompt clinical assessment if the sensitivity is new, persistent, worsening, mainly in one eye, or associated with redness or headache. Avoid using someone else's eye drops or leftover prescription drops because steroid-containing products can worsen some eye problems.

When to seek urgent care

Seek emergency care for sudden loss or major change of vision, severe eye pain, a chemical splash, a penetrating injury, or light sensitivity after significant head trauma. Chemical exposure should be rinsed immediately with plenty of clean running water while emergency help is arranged.

Get urgent medical help for light sensitivity with fever and neck stiffness, confusion, fainting, a seizure, unusual drowsiness, a rapidly spreading rash, weakness, or a sudden severe headache. These accompanying symptoms drive the urgency even though light sensitivity itself has many possible causes.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether the pattern suggests an eye problem, migraine, medication effect, or infection; whether your vision and eye pressure need checking; and which pain relief or eye treatment is appropriate. Mention when symptoms began, whether one or both eyes are affected, contact-lens use, recent injury or chemicals, new medicines, headache features, fever, discharge, and every change in vision.

Questions people ask

Can a migraine cause sudden light sensitivity?

Yes. Migraine often presents with light sensitivity and may also cause headache, nausea, visual disturbance, or sound sensitivity. A first, unusually severe, or neurologically complicated headache still needs prompt assessment.

Should I wear sunglasses indoors?

Temporary use may make a bright environment tolerable, but continuously staying in very dark conditions can make normal light harder to tolerate. Use comfortable lighting while the cause is assessed.

When is a red eye with light sensitivity concerning?

A painful red eye with reduced or blurred vision, marked sensitivity, injury, or contact-lens use warrants urgent eye assessment because problems beyond surface irritation may be present.
