ACDF Spinal Surgery Explained

ACDF stands for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. It may be considered when a disc or bony change in the cervical spine presses on a nerve root or the spinal cord and symptoms remain significant despite suitable nonsurgical management.

The term anterior describes the approach through the front of the neck. Discectomy is removal of the affected disc and other compressive tissue. Fusion means placing graft material and often a cage between the vertebrae so that they can heal into a stable unit.

The operation is designed to create more room for the affected nerve or spinal cord while preventing painful or unsafe movement at the operated level. It can be used for problems such as cervical radiculopathy or spinal cord compression, but the exact reason must match the examination and scans.

Prepare by reviewing all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, supplements, allergies, and previous reactions to anaesthesia with the care team. Follow the individual instructions for fasting and for medicines that affect bleeding. Nicotine can interfere with bone healing, so discuss support for stopping before and after fusion.

At home, keep the incision clean as directed, take medicines only as prescribed, and increase walking gradually within the limits provided. Avoid lifting, strenuous exercise, and prolonged driving until cleared. Rehabilitation is tailored: some people need guided physiotherapy after the early healing phase, whereas others start with a home walking and movement plan.

Call emergency services if breathing becomes difficult, the front of the neck swells quickly, swallowing suddenly becomes severely restricted, or new major limb weakness develops. New loss of bladder or bowel control also needs immediate medical assessment.

Notify the surgeon without delay if the incision opens, drains fluid, becomes increasingly red, or is accompanied by fever. Report a clear deterioration in arm pain, sensation, coordination, balance, or walking. Also seek advice for persistent vomiting, uncontrolled pain, or a swollen painful calf.

Ask the spine surgeon to show the compressed area on your scan and explain whether the main goal is to improve nerve-root symptoms, protect the spinal cord, stabilize the neck, or combine these aims. Find out how many levels are proposed and how that choice may affect movement.

Discuss alternatives, the planned graft and fixation, anaesthesia considerations, and health factors that may change your recovery. Request clear milestones for wound review, returning to work, driving, exercise, and deciding whether physiotherapy is appropriate.
