Understanding and Caring for an ACDF Incision

The surgeon uses the anterior neck opening to move between natural tissue planes and reach the affected disc. Closure may involve absorbable stitches beneath the skin, external stitches, clips, adhesive, or narrow wound strips. The covering and removal plan therefore depend on the closure method. Early bruising, mild tenderness, and a small amount of local swelling can occur, but the overall trend should move toward comfort and closure rather than expansion or drainage.

Temporary throat soreness, swallowing discomfort, or a changed voice may accompany the anterior approach because the operative corridor lies near the oesophagus, airway, and voice structures. These symptoms are separate from the skin incision and should be reported if severe, worsening, or interfering with fluids.

Wash your hands before touching the dressing or nearby skin. Keep the area dry for the period specified by the surgical team, and change coverings only by the method provided. Do not peel adhesive, remove wound strips, apply creams, or scrub the line unless instructed. Choose loose clothing that does not rub the neck, and check the wound in good light each day for changes in colour, swelling, separation, or fluid.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, rapidly enlarging neck swelling, inability to swallow saliva, or sudden neurological weakness. Contact the surgical team promptly if the wound opens, bleeding does not stop with the advised approach, drainage becomes cloudy or foul-smelling, redness spreads, pain intensifies, or fever develops. Increasing swallowing difficulty, a worsening voice change, or fluid leaking through the dressing also merits timely assessment.

Before leaving the facility, establish what type of closure and dressing you have, when the dressing may come off, and when showering is allowed. Ask whether any stitches or clips require removal, which cleaning products are suitable, and whom to contact after hours. Confirm how a cervical collar should sit without rubbing the wound and when scar products or sun protection may begin after full closure.
