Understanding the Cage Used in ACDF

Removing a cervical disc leaves a gap between two vertebral bodies. The cage fills that gap and helps preserve the height needed around nerve openings. Its centre can hold bone graft or another fusion material so new bone can bridge the treated level. Cages come in different shapes, sizes, and materials; the surgeon selects one to match the anatomy and the planned correction.

A cage does not relieve pressure by itself. Decompression comes from removing the disc, bone spurs, or other tissue pressing on a nerve root or the spinal cord. The implant then supports the reconstructed space. Some constructs use a separate plate and screws, while others combine fixation features with the spacer.

Protect the healing construct by following the prescribed limits for lifting, bending, driving, and exercise. Take only medicines and supplements cleared by the treating team, because individual health conditions can affect the plan. Keep scheduled reviews even if symptoms improve; the clinician uses examination findings and, when appropriate, imaging to assess alignment and bone healing. Report a fall or direct neck injury rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, rapidly expanding neck swelling, inability to swallow saliva, sudden weakness, or a new loss of bladder or bowel control. Notify the surgical service promptly about fever, wound drainage, spreading redness, increasing neck or arm pain, new numbness, or worsening weakness. Implant concerns cannot be confirmed from symptoms alone, so an examination is needed if recovery changes unexpectedly.

Ask what the cage is made from, what graft material will be placed in or around it, and why its dimensions suit your neck. Find out whether separate plate-and-screw fixation is planned, how the construct will be checked after surgery, and which activities could overload it during healing. Mention allergies, previous neck operations, nicotine use, and medicines that affect bone health or bleeding.
