What an abnormal mammogram means and what happens next

The radiologist may need earlier images for comparison, extra mammogram views, an ultrasound, or occasionally a biopsy. Follow the recommendation on your report even if you feel well, because mammograms can show changes before they can be felt.

A screening image may show overlapping normal tissue, a difference from an earlier mammogram, calcifications, a mass, or an area that is difficult to assess. Dense breast tissue can also make an image harder to interpret. Many findings are ultimately explained by non-cancerous breast changes, but only the recommended assessment can clarify the result.

Read the report's assessment and recommendation together. An incomplete result means more information is needed, while a finding described as probably benign may be monitored with repeat imaging. A suspicious finding may lead to a biopsy, in which tissue is examined to determine what the imaging change represents.

Contact the imaging centre or referring clinician if no follow-up appointment has been arranged. Ask which test is recommended, how soon it should happen, and who will explain the result. Bring or request transfer of earlier mammograms, especially if they were performed at another facility, because comparison can show whether an area is stable or new.

Tell the breast-imaging team about pregnancy, breastfeeding, implants, previous breast surgery or biopsy, hormone medicines, and any current breast change. Do not skip the appointment because the breast looks or feels normal. If anxiety is making the wait difficult, ask the centre when results are expected and whether someone can accompany you.

An abnormal mammogram result alone is generally handled through the recommended breast-imaging follow-up rather than emergency care. Arrange a prompt clinical assessment if you notice a new lump or armpit swelling, skin dimpling, a new change in breast shape, a nipple turning inward, or nipple discharge, particularly if it is bloody. Do not wait for a routine imaging appointment to mention a new symptom.

Seek urgent medical advice if a breast becomes red, hot, swollen, and painful, especially with fever, chills, or feeling very unwell. These features can occur with an infection that may need timely treatment.

Ask which finding prompted the recall, whether previous images were compared, and what assessment appears on the report. Clarify whether you need targeted mammogram views, ultrasound, MRI, or biopsy; what preparation is required; when results should be available; and who will coordinate the next step. If short-interval imaging is advised, record the intended timing before leaving.
