What should you know about summation artifact mammogram?

A mammogram compresses breast tissue into projected images. Normal structures from different depths can overlap and create a denser area or shape that is not a separate mass. This is called a summation artifact. It is an imaging limitation, not a diagnosis by itself. The radiology team may compare earlier images or use focused views to decide whether the area changes when the tissue is repositioned. A report may recommend further assessment without saying that cancer is present.

Follow the radiology team’s recommendation and ask what question the next test is meant to answer. Additional mammogram views, Breast Ultrasound or Breast Tomosynthesis may separate overlapping tissue. 3D Mammography can show slices through the breast, while a Digital Mammography System records the images electronically. If the area remains unclear, Breast MRI may be considered in selected situations. Keep the appointment even if you feel well, and mention any lump, discharge or skin change.

Contact a breast clinician promptly for a new lump, persistent focal pain, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge or a visible change in breast shape. These symptoms do not identify a cause on their own, but they should be assessed alongside the imaging report. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling or fever.

Ask whether old images were compared, whether the appearance resolves on focused views, which test is recommended next, and when you should expect the radiology conclusion.
