Ectopic pregnancy at 10 weeks: what you need to know

This diagnosis means the pregnancy has implanted outside the main cavity of the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. It cannot continue normally or be moved into the uterus. Treatment protects your health and is chosen according to your symptoms, scan findings, pregnancy hormone results and clinical stability.

An ectopic pregnancy may present with one-sided lower abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, brown discharge, shoulder-tip pain, discomfort during bowel movements, or no obvious symptoms. These symptoms also occur with other conditions, so their presence alone cannot confirm where the pregnancy is located.

Assessment commonly includes a transvaginal ultrasound and blood tests that track the pregnancy hormone pattern. When the location remains uncertain, repeat testing may be needed. A clinician also considers examination findings, previous scans and whether your symptoms are changing.

Contact an early pregnancy or gynaecology service promptly if ectopic pregnancy is suspected or diagnosed. Depending on the findings, care may involve close monitoring, medicine that stops pregnancy tissue from growing, or surgery. Surgery may remove the affected pregnancy and sometimes the involved fallopian tube.

Keep every planned blood test and scan, because changing results guide whether the current approach remains suitable. Before leaving care, obtain clear instructions about activity, medicines, follow-up, contraception, future pregnancy planning and the symptoms that mean you should return immediately.

Call emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department for sudden or severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, collapse, marked dizziness, unusual paleness, breathlessness, or heavy bleeding. These warning signs can indicate rupture and internal bleeding. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell.

Ask whether the pregnancy location is confirmed, what the ultrasound and hormone results show, and why the recommended management suits your situation. If medicine or monitoring is proposed, clarify how follow-up will confirm that treatment is complete. If surgery is advised, ask whether the tube is likely to be removed and how this may affect future pregnancy planning.
