What vaginal itching feels like

Itching may be felt inside the vagina, on the vulva, or around the opening. You might notice redness, swelling, soreness, burning, altered discharge or discomfort when urine touches irritated skin. Scratching can break the skin and make irritation harder to settle.

When itching needs prompt care

Seek prompt medical advice for severe swelling, open sores, blisters, fever, pelvic pain, difficulty passing urine or symptoms after a new sexual contact. Arrange an assessment when itching persists, keeps returning, occurs during pregnancy or does not improve with a treatment chosen for a confirmed diagnosis.

Common causes

The causes are listed alphabetically, not as a likelihood ranking. Bacterial Vaginosis can alter the vaginal balance and discharge, sometimes with irritation. Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause can make tissue dry, thin and itchy as oestrogen changes. Lichen Sclerosus is an inflammatory vulval skin condition that may cause intense itching and pale or fragile skin. Trichomoniasis can cause irritation and discharge and is sexually transmitted. Vaginal Thrush can cause itching, soreness and a thick discharge. Soaps, pads, sweat and tight clothing can also irritate the area.

How clinicians find the cause

The clinician will ask about onset, discharge, odour, pain, periods, products, antibiotics and sexual exposure. Examination can show inflammation, discharge, cracks or changes in vulval skin. A vaginal swab may test for thrush, bacterial vaginosis or sexually transmitted infections; urine testing may be useful when urinary symptoms are present. Avoid self-treating repeatedly before assessment if the diagnosis is uncertain.

Treatment depends on the finding

Vaginal Thrush is treated with an antifungal when the diagnosis fits. Bacterial vaginosis and Trichomoniasis require clinician-directed antimicrobial treatment, with partner advice when relevant. Lichen Sclerosus may need Topical Steroid Treatment for Vulval Skin and ongoing review. Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause may improve with moisturisers, lubricants or hormone-based options discussed with a clinician. Stop fragranced products that sting and do not put household remedies in the vagina.

Protecting vulval skin

Use lukewarm water and a gentle unscented cleanser if needed; avoid douching, deodorant sprays and scented wipes. Change damp underwear, choose breathable clothing and avoid scratching. Use condoms and arrange sexual-health testing when exposure is possible. Complete prescribed treatment and return if the itch continues or comes back.

Other symptoms to notice

Itching may occur with discharge, odour, burning, pain during sex, redness, swelling, cracks or sores. The combination can be useful, but it cannot confirm a diagnosis without the history, examination or tests that a clinician considers appropriate.

Planning the next step

Note the location of the itch, its triggers, discharge changes and any new products or medicines. Early assessment can prevent repeated unsuitable treatments and identify skin conditions that need monitoring. Questions people ask

Should I use thrush treatment for any vaginal itch?

No. Itching has several possible causes, and repeated antifungal use can delay the right diagnosis when thrush is not the cause.

Can a skin condition cause vaginal itching?

Yes. Conditions affecting vulval skin, including Lichen Sclerosus, can cause persistent itching and need clinical assessment.
