What tremor can feel like

A tremor is involuntary rhythmic shaking that can affect the hands, head, voice, or other body parts.

It may be more noticeable while holding a cup, writing, using a phone, reaching for an object, or resting a limb. Some people describe an internal sense of shakiness even when movement is subtle. Note which body part moves, whether it occurs at rest or during activity, and anything that makes it better or worse.

When to seek urgent help

Seek emergency care if shaking begins suddenly with facial droop, weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, severe headache, fainting, a seizure, chest pain, or marked confusion. Contact a clinician promptly if tremor follows a head injury, comes with fever and severe stiffness, or interferes with eating, drinking, walking, or safe use of medicines.

Possible causes to consider

Shaking can have several explanations, so the timing and accompanying symptoms matter. Alcohol withdrawal can cause tremor, sweating, agitation, nausea, or hallucinations and needs medical support. Anxiety can bring shaking with a racing heart or tense muscles. An overactive thyroid may be accompanied by heat intolerance, palpitations, or unintentional weight change. Low blood glucose can cause sweating, hunger, dizziness, or confusion, particularly in people using glucose-lowering treatment.

How clinicians assess tremor

Assessment starts with the story of the movement: when it began, its speed, the situations in which it appears, and its effect on daily tasks. A clinician may watch the hands at rest, while held out, and during a task such as drawing a spiral. They may review medicines, alcohol and other substances, family history, sleep, diet, and symptoms affecting nerves, balance, mood, or thyroid function. Blood tests or other investigations are selected from these findings.

Treatment follows the cause

Care is tailored to the identified trigger or condition. Low glucose should be treated according to an existing diabetes plan, with urgent help for severe drowsiness or inability to swallow safely. A clinician can review medicines or stimulants, address anxiety, and arrange thyroid testing or treatment when appropriate. Do not suddenly stop alcohol if you drink heavily or regularly; withdrawal can be dangerous and should be planned with medical support.

Ways to reduce avoidable shaking

Regular meals can help prevent glucose dips for people prone to them. Keep a consistent sleep routine, drink enough fluid, and notice whether caffeine, nicotine, decongestants, or energy products worsen symptoms. Use prescribed medicines exactly as directed and seek advice before adding supplements. If tremor affects fine tasks, sit down, use two hands for hot drinks, and choose utensils or pens with a comfortable grip.

Symptoms to mention alongside tremor

Tell a clinician about weakness, numbness, changes in speech, poor balance, stiffness, headaches, palpitations, sweating, appetite changes, sleep disruption, or changes in mood. These details do not diagnose a condition by themselves, but they help direct a focused assessment.

Why follow-up matters

Persistent tremor can make work, meals, writing, and social situations more difficult. Finding a reversible contributor may reduce the movement and protect day-to-day independence. If the cause is a longer-term neurological or medical condition, follow-up can focus on symptom control, safety, and practical adaptations.

Questions people ask

Can anxiety cause shaking?

Anxiety can be associated with shaking, muscle tension, palpitations, and rapid breathing. New, persistent, or function-limiting tremor still deserves assessment, especially if other physical symptoms are present.

Should I stop caffeine if I have tremor?

If you notice a relationship, reducing caffeine and energy products may be useful. Keep track of the change and discuss persistent tremor with a clinician rather than assuming caffeine is the only cause.
