What counts as night sweats

Night sweats are episodes of sweating during sleep that can soak clothing or bedding despite a cool sleeping environment.

Waking warm after a heavy duvet or in a hot room is different from recurrent drenching sweats. Some people wake needing to change clothes or sheets. Note whether episodes come with fever, chills, cough, pain, weight change, swollen glands, tiredness, palpitations or changes in menstrual cycles.

When to get medical help

Seek urgent care for night sweats with trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, a severe headache, coughing blood, or a person who appears seriously unwell. Arrange a medical appointment when drenching episodes recur, disturb sleep, occur with a persistent fever, unexplained weight change, swollen glands, ongoing cough, or new symptoms after starting a medicine.

Conditions and situations to consider

Night sweats can have several causes, and this list is alphabetical rather than a likelihood ranking. Hormonal changes around menopause can trigger hot flushes at night. Infections such as brucellosis, glandular fever, HIV infection and tuberculosis may cause sweats with other symptoms. An overactive thyroid can cause heat intolerance and palpitations. Sleep conditions, medicines, alcohol and anxiety may also contribute. Some blood disorders and cancers, including lymphomas, can present with night sweats, but sweats alone do not identify the cause.

What an assessment may involve

Your clinician will ask about the pattern, bedding and room temperature, fever, infections, travel, medicines, menstrual history, sleep quality and other symptoms. They may examine your temperature, heart rate, neck and underarm glands, chest, abdomen and thyroid area. Blood tests, urine tests, a chest X-ray or other tests may be chosen according to the history and examination.

Care is tailored to the underlying reason

Treatment focuses on the cause found. This may include treating an infection, reviewing medicines, managing an overactive thyroid, or addressing a sleep disorder. For menopausal symptoms, lifestyle measures and hormone replacement therapy may be options for some people after an individual discussion of benefits and risks. Avoid starting or stopping hormone treatment without clinical guidance.

Practical steps while you monitor symptoms

Keep the bedroom comfortably cool, choose breathable sleepwear and bedding, and keep a spare top nearby if episodes disrupt sleep. Limit alcohol if you notice it precedes sweating, and record the date, severity, associated symptoms and possible triggers. These notes can make a clinical consultation more focused. Prevention depends on the cause, so recurrent episodes deserve assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Questions people ask

Are night sweats the same as hot flushes?

They can be linked. Hot flushes are sudden feelings of heat and can occur at night, while night sweats describe sweating during sleep. A clinician can help identify whether hormonal change is contributing.

Should I change my bedding after one sweaty night?

Cooling the room and using lighter bedding may help if the room was hot. If soaking episodes recur or come with other symptoms, arrange a medical assessment.
