WHO names 4 awardees; UAE hospitals get a 30-day readiness check

World Health Organization (WHO) honoured 4 global health leaders on 18 May 2026, giving UAE hospitals a board-level checklist for vaccines, outbreaks, emergency command and burn care.

The practical issue for UAE providers is whether those priorities are visible in local protocols, staffing drills, digital reporting and funded service capacity. Hospitals regulated by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DOH) and the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) should treat the Geneva announcement as a prompt for a readiness review, not as a ceremonial item.

WHO said Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus presented the 2026 Award for Global Health during the Seventy-ninth World Health Assembly in Geneva on 18 May 2026. The 4 laureates were Dr Tore Godal, Dr Merceline Dahl-Regis, Dr Mike Ryan and Dr Heba El Sewedy.

WHO said the award was established in 2019 to recognise people whose work has produced measurable health gains. Dr Godal was cited for immunisation and infectious disease work linked to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Roll Back Malaria and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). Dr Dahl-Regis was cited for work on measles and rubella elimination in the Americas, the first WHO region to reach that milestone. Dr Ryan, a founder of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN), was recognised for emergency response work across SARS, cholera, Ebola, polio and COVID-19. Dr El Sewedy, founder of the Ahl Masr Foundation in 2013, was honoured for burn injury prevention, treatment, psychosocial support and humanitarian aid linked to the Gaza conflict.
