Moderna’s 50-plus mRNA flu shot reaches US as UAE clinics wait on MOHAP approval

Moderna’s MFLUSIVA, the first mRNA influenza vaccine, is now available in the US for adults aged 50 and older, but UAE clinics should treat it as a regulatory watch item until Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) registration and local payer rules are clear.

The immediate audience is clinic COOs, medical directors and insurers. The operational question is simple: whether a new adult flu vaccine should be added to procurement, consent forms, cold-chain procedures and coverage policies for the 2026-2027 respiratory season. For Dubai, the relevant regulator is the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). For Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, it is the Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DOH) and the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC). For the northern emirates, MOHAP remains the main reference point.

What changed in the US

The US Food and Drug Administration approved MFLUSIVA on 5 August 2026. The FDA label says the vaccine is indicated for active immunisation against influenza disease caused by influenza A subtypes and type B represented in the vaccine, and is approved for people 50 years and older.

The Gulf Coast News and Weather report, syndicated from US coverage, framed the product as the first flu shot using messenger RNA technology. That matters because influenza vaccines have traditionally been made using egg-based or cell-based production. An mRNA platform can shorten strain-update timelines if manufacturers and regulators accept the data package each season.

For medical directors, the liability point is product-specific. A US approval does not give automatic prescribing authority in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah. UAE providers should check MOHAP’s registered product databases, distributor notices and regulator circulars before changing clinical protocols.

What UAE providers can act on now

DHA’s immunisation guideline, issued on 25 September 2024, recommends annual influenza vaccination for people aged six months and older, with vaccination ideally offered in September or October and continued while influenza viruses circulate and unexpired vaccine is available. A Dubai legal tariff set the DHA seasonal influenza vaccine charge at AED 50 in 2020.

Abu Dhabi has moved earlier this season. ADPHC said on 18 September 2026 that it had started offering seasonal flu vaccines at selected Majalis in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra, with wider access across healthcare facilities, schools, workplaces, shopping malls and pharmacies during September. ADPHC also said more than 350,000 people in Abu Dhabi received a flu vaccine during the 2025-2026 season through more than 130 healthcare facilities and 11 pharmacies.

MOHAP launched the UAE’s 2026-2027 influenza and seasonal respiratory diseases campaign on 15 September 2026. Dr Nada Al Marzouqi, Director of Public Health and Prevention at MOHAP, said the body requires around two weeks after influenza vaccination to develop an adequate immune response.

The commercial questions for clinics and insurers

For Dubai clinics, the first decision is whether existing flu vaccine inventory, consent language and adverse-event reporting workflows can accommodate an mRNA product if MOHAP registers it. For Abu Dhabi providers, the operational baseline is ADPHC’s free seasonal flu access model and DOH supervision. For northern emirates providers, MOHAP and Emirates Health Services campaign materials should be the first compliance references.

Insurers including Daman, Thiqa and Sukoon should watch three items before setting benefit rules: UAE registration status, DHA or DOH coding guidance, and whether high-risk adults aged 50 to 64 are priced differently from adults 65 and older. If a price is not published, finance teams should ask the distributor for the registered wholesale price and ask the regulator or payer for the reimbursable code before building packages around the product.

Patients should not delay available seasonal vaccination while waiting for one product. UAE campaigns already prioritise older adults, pregnant women, young children, people with chronic disease and healthcare workers. Emergency departments should expect influenza-like illness to overlap with RSV and COVID-19 during the campaign period running to March 2027.
