Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital has introduced Moviva gastric mucosal ablation in Dubai, a first-in-UAE endoscopic weight-loss procedure positioned as an alternative to bariatric surgery and long-term weight-loss medication.

The highest-stakes readers are COOs, CFOs and medical directors. For clinics, the question is whether to add a new bariatric endoscopy pathway under Dubai Health Authority (DHA) oversight. For insurers, including Daman, Thiqa and Sukoon where policy terms apply, the issue is whether Moviva is coded as endoscopy, obesity treatment, metabolic care or an elective self-pay service. For patients, the immediate risk is simpler: first-in-market procedures often arrive before public price lists and long-term local outcomes data.

What Medcare announced

Biz Today reported on 24 August 2026 that Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital introduced Gastric Mucosal Ablation, marketed as Moviva, for patients with obesity and weight-related health conditions. The procedure is performed through the mouth by endoscopy, without external incisions, stitches or permanent anatomical changes to the stomach.

Biz Today named Professor Dr. Mohamed Abdelhafez, Consultant Gastroenterology at Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital, as the doctor who led the procedure. The report said four patients lost 18 kg, 36 kg, 32 kg and 26 kg, respectively. It did not publish baseline weights, body mass index, follow-up duration, adverse events, package price or payer coverage.

“Patients feel fuller for longer, which supports sustainable lifestyle changes without the risks associated with surgery.” Professor Dr. Mohamed Abdelhafez, Consultant Gastroenterology, Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital.

Those omissions matter. Weight loss expressed in kilograms is useful for marketing. Operators and payers need percentage total body weight loss, remission data for diabetes or fatty liver disease, complications, repeat-procedure rates and 12-month follow-up.

The payer and clinic questions

Dubai providers should treat Moviva as a new bariatric endoscopy service until DHA coding, privileging and claims experience become clearer. In Abu Dhabi, providers would need to map the same service against Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DOH) licensing, clinical privileging and payer pre-authorisation rules. In Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, the relevant regulator is the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP).

No public UAE Moviva tariff was available in the source article. The practical benchmark is the existing endoscopic weight-loss market. Al Zahra Hospital Dubai lists AED 30,000 for endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty and AED 14,500 for a 12-month endoscopic gastric balloon package. Novomed states Dubai gastric balloon costs typically range from AED 18,000 to AED 30,000. Moviva may price differently because it uses a specific ablation device, anaesthesia, endoscopy time and follow-up dietetic care.

  • COOs should confirm DHA-approved facility scope, gastroenterology privileges, anaesthesia cover and emergency escalation before launch.
  • CFOs should model a self-pay base case, then test payer coverage only after coding and pre-authorisation wording are confirmed.
  • Medical directors should require documented eligibility, consent language and complication management for every patient.
  • CIOs should ensure procedure notes, BMI, comorbidities and outcomes are captured in structured fields.

What evidence is still thin

Moviva targets the gastric mucosa, the stomach lining involved in hunger hormone signalling. The device maker Erbe cites early 2025 and 2026 clinical publications on gastric fundal mucosal ablation and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty. Mayo Clinic described gastric fundal mucosal ablation on 10 March 2026 as an emerging procedure with early evidence, while noting that larger and longer studies are still needed.

The demand signal is real. MOHAP said on 6 January 2026 that 22.4% of UAE adults are living with obesity, 25.9% have high blood pressure and 12.5% have elevated blood glucose. That creates a large pool of patients who may ask for a non-surgical option. It also creates room for overuse if clinics sell the procedure without a dietetics pathway and long-term monitoring.

Patients should ask for five items before consent: the doctor’s DHA, DOH or MOHAP licence; the written indication based on BMI and comorbidities; the full AED package price; the expected follow-up schedule; and the clinic’s own outcomes after six and 12 months. Insurers should ask the same questions before approving claims.

The next test is whether Medcare publishes local outcomes and whether other Dubai hospitals add bariatric endoscopy capacity in 2026. Clinics considering nutrition and weight-management partnerships can start with licensed providers listed in the UAE Open Healthcare Directory for nutrition dietetics, then verify the provider’s active regulator licence before referral.
