Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital in Dubai says it has introduced Gastric Mucosal Ablation (Moviva), a non-surgical, medicine-free endoscopic weight-loss procedure, according to a Biz Today report published on 24 August 2026.
The highest-stakes readers are COOs, CFOs and medical directors. For Dubai clinics, the immediate question is whether this becomes a new bariatric endoscopy service under Dubai Health Authority (DHA) licensing and privileging. For payers, the question is whether it sits beside gastric balloons, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty and bariatric surgery, or remains a self-pay procedure until longer follow-up is available.
What Medcare says it has launched
Biz Today reported that Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital has introduced Moviva for patients with obesity and weight-related conditions who want an alternative to conventional bariatric surgery and long-term weight-loss medication. The report named four patient weight-loss outcomes: 18 kilograms, 36 kilograms, 32 kilograms and 26 kilograms. It did not publish each patient’s baseline weight, body mass index, follow-up duration, adverse events or whether Moviva was performed alone or with another endoscopic therapy.
The procedure is performed through the mouth with an endoscope. It targets the gastric mucosa in the stomach fundus, where ghrelin-producing cells are concentrated. Erbe, the German device company behind Moviva, describes the system as combining needle-free fluid injection with argon plasma coagulation. The clinical claim is appetite reduction through mucosal ablation, without cutting, stapling, implants or permanent stomach removal.
"Moviva addresses the biological drivers of weight gain rather than simply restricting food intake." Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abdelhafez, Consultant Gastroenterology, Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital
Why clinics and insurers should move slowly
The commercial opening is clear. Dubai already has a large addressable base. A BMJ Open study of 2,142 Dubai adults found 57.6% were overweight or obese, including 17.8% with obesity. Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) announced on 26 June 2025 a national clinical guideline for adult weight management and obesity prevention, so obesity care is moving further into regulated chronic disease management.
Pricing is the first CFO issue. Medcare has not published a Moviva tariff in the Biz Today article. UAE operators can benchmark against adjacent self-pay procedures before setting packages or payer discussions:
- AED 9,500 to AED 30,000 for gastric balloon programmes, based on published Dubai clinic ranges.
- AED 29,000 to AED 33,000 for endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, based on published Dubai doctor and hospital package pages.
- AED 35,000 to AED 40,000 for common bariatric surgery packages, based on published UAE hospital package pages.
- Moviva-specific pricing should be requested in writing from the treating hospital, including anaesthesia, endoscopy suite time, follow-up dietetics and complication management.
Coverage is the second issue. Daman, Thiqa and Sukoon plans may treat obesity interventions differently by product, network, medical necessity and prior authorization rules. Clinics should secure written payer positions before marketing Moviva as reimbursable. Patients should ask whether nutrition follow-up, endoscopy, anaesthesia and repeat procedures are included or billed separately.
Regulatory and clinical checks
For Dubai, providers should confirm that the procedure, endoscopy privileges and obesity pathway are acceptable under DHA facility licensing and professional scope. In Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, the relevant regulator is the Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DOH). In Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, MOHAP applies.
Eligibility also needs precision. A public registry entry for gastric fundus mucosal ablation research lists adult eligibility as 18 to 65 years and BMI 27 to 55 kg/m2, but that is a study criterion, not a UAE reimbursement rule. UAE bariatric surgery recommendations have commonly used higher BMI thresholds, including BMI 40 without comorbidities or BMI 35 with comorbidities. Medical directors should separate Moviva candidate selection from surgical eligibility, then document consent around evidence maturity.
The next test is data. Medcare’s four named outcomes are useful for patient interest, but operators need audited follow-up at three, six and 12 months, complication rates, medication use after the procedure and weight regain rates. Clinics adding bariatric endoscopy should pair it with licensed dietetics, metabolic screening and clear referral triggers for surgery or endocrinology.
Patients and operators comparing weight-loss services should start with licensed providers. The UAE Open Healthcare Directory lists licensed healthcare providers across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the northern emirates, including nutrition and dietetics providers for pre- and post-procedure care.
