NIPT vs Nuchal Translucency Scan: What Is the Difference?

NIPT analyses small fragments of placental DNA in the pregnant person's blood. A nuchal translucency scan is an ultrasound assessment performed during an early part of pregnancy. Neither test gives a diagnosis on its own. The right choice depends on gestational timing, the screening offered in your maternity pathway, medical history, and what questions need answering.

NIPT may be considered when you want a blood-based screen for selected chromosome conditions and it is available at the relevant stage of pregnancy. It can be useful when a clinician wants screening information that does not depend on an ultrasound measurement. A result that indicates a higher chance needs discussion and usually requires diagnostic follow-up before decisions are made.

A nuchal translucency scan may suit you when you want an ultrasound view of early development as part of first-trimester care. The scan can contribute information about the baby's neck area and visible early anatomy, which DNA screening cannot show. It may also identify a finding that needs a more detailed scan or specialist review, whether or not you have chosen NIPT.

NIPT requires a blood draw, while ultrasound does not involve a needle. Both are screening tests, so a result can be reassuring without ruling out every condition, or can indicate increased chance without confirming one. Ultrasound views can be limited by gestational age, fetal position, or image quality. If a result or scan finding is concerning, your clinician may offer genetic counselling, a detailed ultrasound, or a diagnostic test. Ask what result categories mean before testing and how results will be communicated.

If you need confirmation rather than screening, ask about diagnostic testing and its timing. If the concern is structural development, a later detailed ultrasound may be more informative. If you have a multiple pregnancy, a known genetic history, or a previous pregnancy affected by a chromosome condition, the usual pathway may need adjustment. A midwife, obstetrician, or genetic counsellor can explain which options fit your circumstances.

A clinician will usually consider how far the pregnancy has progressed, whether an ultrasound is already planned, the conditions included in each screen, and what follow-up is available locally. They should also explain possible uncertain or unexpected findings, the difference between screening and diagnosis, and your choices if a result needs confirmation. You can ask whether doing both tests adds useful information, which findings each test could miss, and when a result would change the next step.
